Promoting education & registration
Why we need the UKREMT?!
It is well known and well established in the UK that paramedics, nurses and doctors have very good registration schemes, in fact they are held up across the world as the gold standard and as such keep the public safe, along with other bodies such as the College of Paramedics which lead the field globally in paramedic education.
However, Currently in the UK not all staff working within pre-hospital emergency medicine are registered and 100% audited (currently only paramedics, doctors and nurses are), add to that the very wide range of courses and skill sets for grades below paramedic, it is difficult for those in the industry to know where one particular individual sits. Also their titles such as “Technician” and “EMT” are not protected, this mean that the variation of the skills of a technician or EMT is very wide. Therefore, it is almost impossible for the public to understand the various titles because of the described differences and the public assume (especially in the event industry) that every ambulance is the same and if dressed in green you’re a “paramedic”.
Emergency Medical Technicians are an important resource as part of ambulance crews and in the event sector make up the majority of those practicing in the prehospital care arena. They are highly trained and skilled in their role and they should be recognised as such and should be registered in the same way as paramedics and other healthcare providers.
Recent incidents have highlighted the need for registration, not only to improve the status of an EMT but to reassure the public that when dealing with patients in ambulance situations they can trust the role of an EMT.
The UKREMT would like to see the Government undertake this role and ensure all practising IHCD Technicians, AAPs and FREUC 5s are registered with the HCPC but though this has had good support in the past, we believe that it is still a long way off being a reality. Even if this happens it will still leave a huge amount of practitioners missing out on registration and there are many more prehospital grades that need registering.
The UKREMT has stepped up to fill this void in protecting the public.
The UKREMT registers all those working in prehospital care and matches their skills to the PHEM skills framework (A-H).
Importantly we are doing it for FREE to ensure that cost is not a barrier to registration no other registration scheme in the UK either voluntary such as HPAC or other bodies offer free registration. This is a mjor factor in the current economic climate to remove all barriers to registrations.
